Abstract

This research was motivated by the emergence of the phenomenon of the use of greeting words in the Merangin Jambi community. Greeting words in regional languages began to be eroded by outside influencers, especially by social media that continues to grow. The use of greeting words slowly began to be abandoned by speakers. This study aims to describe and reveal the use of greeting words in the people of Lake Village, Kungkai Village, and Rengas Island Village, Merangin Regency. The study in this study is based on theories put forward by several experts related to words or expressions used in the greeting system.  This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data and data sources of this research are in the form of vocabulary obtained from documents and interviews with community leaders. The results revealed that: thereare similaritiesbetween the three villages, namely Lake, Kungkai and Rengas Island villages located in the category of types and functions of greeting words, namely: greeting words in kinship which include greeting words in nuclear and non-kinship family kinship. There are variations in the use of greetings, kinship, blood relations and marriage. From the variations of the three greeting languages, it can be concluded that greeting words between villages are influenced by their respective mother tongues and changes in intonation and emphasis on each word used.
